Local discount stores hаvе birdfeeders fоr finches аs wеll аѕ manу other types of birds. Having a wіdе variety of feeders оn уоur prоpеrty wіll nоt оnlу feed those thаt аre аlreаdу аrоund but іt becomes аn instant magnet оncе thе “word” gets out.

When hanging finch bird feeders іt iѕ іmportаnt tо think аbout thе birds’ safety. If thе finch dоеѕ nоt fееl sаfe frоm predators thеу wіll nоt be ѕо apt to eat. If thеrе аrе things such as cats arоund thе feeders nееd tо be hung higher up. By feeding thеѕе bеаutiful bіrdѕ wе dо not wаnt tо put thеm іn danger.

Althоugh thе finch wіll еаt thе seed the squirrels wіll аlѕо bеcomе yоur bеѕt friеndѕ. Тhiѕ іѕ perfectly fіnе fоr thоѕе thаt lіkе squirrels but mаnу dо nоt wаnt squirrels nеаr thеіr houses.

When looking аt thе plastic bird feeders fоr finches chеck thе construction. Wіth the changes іn wеаthеr frоm hоt summers аnd thе extremely cоld winders thеу have а tendency tо crack. Thе ones thаt аre not constructed wеll wіll crack wіthin thе firѕt уeаr. Ву buying ones thаt аrе а bit mоrе expensive уou will havе а feeder thаt wіll lаѕt morе than а уеar. Тhіѕ wіll ѕаvе you bоth tіmе аnd mоnеу in thе lоng run.

Another thing tо kееp іn mіnd іѕ whеn choosing thе bird feeders for finches іѕ tо check tо mаkе surе they can bе cleaned. Thеrе wіll bе times when іt іѕ advisable tо tаkе down the feeders аnd gіvе thеm а gооd thorough cleaning. Тhіѕ keeps thе ports whеrе the ѕeеdѕ flоw thrоugh оpеn аnd wіll prevent blocking оf thе feeder.

Another grеаt tуpе оf bird feeders for finches іѕ the tуpe thаt will gо оn а windоw. Маnу havе thе suction cups ѕo that thеу wіll ѕtick tо а clеan windоw. When fіrѕt putting thе bird feeders fоr finches оn thе windows іt maу tаkе а bіt оf tіme fоr the finch tо fіnd іt. Тherе аrе mаnу оthеr bіrdѕ thаt cаrrу thе finch namе but belоng tо othеr families such аѕ thе waxbill, sparrow оr bunting finches.

Finches hаvе bеcоme verу popular pets оvеr thе years wіth Gouldian, Zebra and Society Finches leading thе wау. Finches аre knоwn fоr thе vibrant, bеаutіful plumage, thеir mating ѕоng аnd thеіr social graces.

The Gouldian finches, or chloebia gouldiae, which is its technical name, are one of the most beautifully colorful birds on Earth some would argue. It can most commonly be found in Australia. But sadly, these finches are endangered. It is estimated by some experts that there are less than two thousand five hundred left. The Australian government is concerned enough about this wonderfully beautiful bird that is has put a stop to the exportation of them. Somewhere around the 1960s they banned it all together.

The Gouldian finches are quite small at only five inches or five and a half inches long. As with most birds in the nature the male is much more colorful than the female. The male also has a much larger center tail feather. It is assumed widely that the fantastic coloring and sometimes added characteristics of the male occurs so that they can easily attract females during mating time. Whether this is true or not it seems to be the norm for birds in their natural environment.

Gouldian finches are not a bird that is bred easily in captivity. They are touted as being much more difficult to care for than other finch species. So really knowing these birds as a breeder and caretaker is something that is mandatory if the are going to survive as a species in captivity. There are three natural-colorings that are common for these birds. There is the red-headed bird, black-headed bird and the yellow-headed bird. These are the most common colorings that are noted but there are variations that occur. Some have even been see with blue and yellow bodies.

The social habits of the Gouldian finches are much like other finches. They are wonderful to listen to with their beautiful soft chirp. They do not like to be handled though or even petted. This makes these not a perfect match for a bird owner that wishes for a bird that likes to be handled or petted. Though human-shy, these birds do better with social contact from another of their kind when kept in captivity. Unfortunately, the same as the males inheriting the coloring, it is the males that are the singers.

Gouldian finches do well in either cages or aviaries that are overly large. It is recommended by experts that they have a minimum of a twenty inch flying space. The cage material can be either metal or wooden either will work well. But the bars should not be spaced more than one-half an inch apart. Experts that have studied them have noticed that they really appreciate boxed housing that is enclosed on all sides but the front. But experts would caution people not to put them into a brass cages due to health issues. Changing their houses can cause stress to these birds and stress can be lethal. Their optimal temperature requirements are seventy degrees with humidity of at least fifty percent for the best living environment.

The Galapagos Finches are sometimes called the Darwin Finch. If anyone has every wondered why then this will help explain it. Charles Darwin based his well-known theory for his thesis that species are not immutable on these birds. Mr. Darwin long-studied these birds and through his research theorized that evolution was a natural process or selection. Hence came Darwin’s theory of evolution.

These small finches live upon, you guessed it, the Galapagos Island. Except one species of this type of bird that can be found upon the Coco Island. They have long been studied due to their ability to adapt easily to their habitat. Their development as a species is thought to be based upon their virtual non-competition on the Galapagos Island. The specific characteristics that they now share are theorized to be due to their ability to adapt.

Hence the Galapagos Finches have a beak size, and behavior that is indicative of what their habitat would need for survival. This same species changed outward appearance due to what what kind of food is available in their area. Some of their beaks changed shape and size for doing things such as crushing seeds, picking on wood or drinking nectar from a flower. Yet, they are still from the same species, but at the same time very different. There is one type of Galapagos Finch known as the woodpecker finch who holds a stick to fish out insects from tree openings. He may even use cactus spines.

DNA has proven that the Galapagos Finch, even in all its different character feature adaptations used to conform to its habitat, are still the same species. Therefore, some agree proving Mr. Darwin’s theory of evolution. But believe it or not Darwin’s famous finches are really not related to finches per say. It is unknown exactly what species they are from.

Galapagos finches can be anywhere between four and eight inches long. They are normally a brown or black in coloring. But bills will be different in accordance with their specific habitat and diet. Most believe the smallest of these birds to be the Warbler and the largest to be the Vegetarian. Other than their great contribution, or infamy, in being part of the making of Mr. Darwin’s theory of evolution they really are a quite ordinary looking bird.

Galapagos Finches are like other finches they sing beautifully for all our enjoyment. Just as diet for these birds will vary from species to species, their breeding will also vary due to differences in species. Each differing species of Galapagos Finches has a unique mating song. This may be due most probably to the difference in beak size due to adaption for eating purposes in the differing habitats. The larger of the species has what has been termed as a much more cumbersome-type song. While birds with smaller beaks sing quicker songs noted to have a much wider-type of tones. This could be significant as it is the song that attracts the mate for the finch.

The Gouldian Finches are inarguably one of the most beautifully colored birds in the world. Sadly they are an endangered species. Their home is naturally found in Australia that has since the 1960s banned them from being exported due to their endangered species ranking. These wonderfully colorful birds are well-known for their three distinct head colors. They are either red-headed, blue-headed or yellow headed. These are usually the monikers of their species but there have been color mutations noted. Due to the fact that they are endangered some have been trying to restore their numbers through domestic breeding.

These birds in all their five inch or sometimes five and half inch size are unfortunately very shy. They are not the type of bird for someone that wants a bird that will love holding or petting. This makes breeding and their delicacy as a kept-bird difficult for their repopulation or being owned-birds. Unfortunately they can suffer from stress, stress that can sometimes have fatal outcomes for them. So the breeding of the Gouldian Finches can be very difficult.

Gouldian Finches believed to be endangered due to the rural development in their natural homeland. But the airsac mite has also been a factor in their decline. The mite attacks their lungs. In domestic situations they do best with another of their kind as they have a need for that kind of social exposure. For breeding purposes they also may do better with a boxed cage that is enclosed on all sides but the front. These types of cages will not only help with their shyness but their susceptibility to the cold drafts that can cause health problems. These cages should have at least a twenty to twenty-four inch flying space. They will also benefit hugely from exposure to sunlight.

Gouldian Finches breeding will best be started with a look at a healthy diet. The healthier the finch the better the chances are for a successful breeding. Feed them seeds, millet, canary, flax and niger seeds. Calcium is also a great mineral that should be included in their diet. A cuttlebone would suffice for this or you could back and crush some chicken egg shells. Grit is also another necessity for them, try and find the grit that contains vitamins, minerals and other trace elements. There is also a baby-bird formula that you can include with their diet after laying occurs.

Gouldian Finches breeding can be quite difficult. They are notorious for not being good nest builders. So providing them with a wicker or bamboo nest will be quite helpful for breeding, though most experts recommend a wooden nesting box. Then include nesting material, either fescues grass or some other type sold at local pet shops. Pre-filling the nest with this is recommended.

Gouldian Finches have a pre-formated mating ritual that can contain sometimes the male jumping up and down until the female responds. Then they will actually bow to each other. Then they will shake their head at each other. These birds are noted as being very private about breeding and actual breeding will take place out of sight. This makes the boxed in cage a good option for them for them, to breed in privacy.
They are inexpensive have an ideal temperament, and are very easy to take care of. Remember water and fresh food must be provided for these robust birds daily. Millets and canary seed will be provided by a good finch seed mix, available in any pet store. Society Finches should also be provided with green foods, on a regular basis. I would suggest some spinach and chickweed. Egg foods, apples or pears can also supplement their daily food. If you would like to treat your bird you can give them some seeds with honey, fruits or vegetables.

Essential for your Society Finches diet is grit with charcoal to aid in digestion, it contains trace elements, and valuable minerals. It should be provided in special cups or sprinkled over the cage floor. I would also suggest a cuttlebone because the calcium will aid a firm beak, and also hard eggshells when they breed. Cuttlebone also prevents egg binding in females. The lime in the bone helps the birds digestion. Society Finches with a good diet lot’s of exercise are most likely never ill. They are very hardy birds.

An occasional bath will be very much appreciated from your society finches. Simply provide a dish in the bottom of the cage about 1 inch deep only fill it half way. Another option is to clip a bath house on the side of the cage. Do not forget to trim the nails, you should be careful never to clip into the vein if you do your bird can easily bleed to death. Buy some steptic powder with your bird nail trimmers available in any pet shop.

I hope this Article brought some clarity how to look after your Society Finches. Enjoy your friends they are lovely companions. provide lot’s of fun and entertainment, when looked after correctly.

Although today the Gouldian Finch is endangered in its natural habitat, there are plenty still available as pets.

These splendidly colored finches can have gray, red, or orange heads, blue or green backs, and are purple, white, or yellow underneath. Their colors are so brilliant that they almost appear to be unnatural. There are three varieties of Gouldian Finches that are naturally-occurring in color. They are the black-headed (Poephila gouldiae), the red-headed (Poephila mirabilis) and the yellow-headed (Poephila armitiana).

Although these are the color varieties that are generally recognized, there can be any number of color combinations derived from these basic colorations including blue and yellow-bodied mutations. The coloration of the male Gouldian Finch is much more brilliant than that of the female. The male also has a noticeably longer center tail feather.
Arguably, Gouldian Finches are one of the most colorful birds in the world.

Gouldian Finches are much more difficult to care for and breed than the heartier finch breeds like the Zebra and the Society Finches. Gouldian Finches are not recommended for the novice bird owner who may have little or no experience with captive finches.Gouldian Finches, like many other types of finches, do not like to be petted or held. Those who would like a pet bird that can easily be finger tamed should probably stay away from the Gouldian Finch. All finches are social and should be kept in one or more pairs in order to satisfy their need to be social. Also, Gouldian Finches are easily disrupted by frequent changes in their housing environment or by movement of their cage. When these birds undergo frequent stress, it can eventually lead to weakening in the birds’ resistance to disease.

Finches are very active birds and this does not exclude the Gouldian Finch. Whether they are in a cage or an aviary, they need the largest flying space out of any other finch species. Although they are only between five and five and a half inches in size, they need a minimum flying space of about twenty inches. Cages for housing Gouldian Finches can either be metal or wooden. Just make sure that the space between cage bars is never greater than one-half inch to prevent injury and escape. Brass cages are not recommended for Gouldian Finches because of the potential toxic qualities. But most cages that are brass in color are not actually made of brass.

In addition to their quirky personalities and their bouncy energy, Gouldian Finch lovers also love to hear the background sounds these small birds make. They have a beautiful soft chirp but, not all Gouldian Finches sing. It is only the males that sing, and some better than others. Although the care of the Gouldian Finch is a little bit more involved then some of the other finch species, their vibrant colors and their pleasant personalities make the care and involvement in the Gouldian Finches’ life wonderful.

They make great pets, it should be a pleasure to care for those charming little gems. In the busy world we life in today a finch is an ideal pet. Finches don’t need the social interaction other birds like parrots demand. In order for them to be happy in your home, we as the pet finch carer need to provide the best possible home for them.

These beautiful very small and active birds must have a cage that is minimum two and a half feet long. The cage bars need to be close enough together to prevent injury to these small and very active birds. They get their exercise by flying so to keep your bird happy and healthy the finches cages must provide enough room for that. There must be more than enough space for short flights. I would advise to have actually two cages. One is used as a temporary cage while cleaning the other.

Within the cage several things need to be provided. At all times there should be a separate feeders for water and food. Extra dishes that can be placed in the cage should also be there for treats and grit. A great way to entertaining yourself is to place a small dish filled with water in the finches cages but only for a short period of time. This should be done several times a week. A nest box to sleep in will be very much appreciated from your finches.

Perches to rest on are needed by your pet finch. They should be of different sizes to provide exercise for your birds feet. To keep the toe nails trimmed, perches made of cement are great. But they are very hard on on their feet and should not be used exclusively. I would recommend using natural perches made from the trees like pear, maple, poplar and cherry. Paper sprinkled with grit, or grit paper should be used at the bottom of the finches cages. In order to prevent mites, you can also attach a “bird protector” disk to the side of the finches cages.

Also toys are needed in your finches cages. Often they like plastic rings bells and generally shiny objects for their entertainment. Lot’s of different kinds of toys are available for your bird in pet stores, retail outlets like, swings beads, ladders, and mirrors. Provide your bird with a view toys at a time keep changing them often to keep things interesting.

Very important is to clean the cage regularly at least once a week. It is a fairly simple process use hot soapy water. Make sure to clean the cage thoroughly including any accessories, rinse and dry. To make it easier cleaning your finches cages line the bottom of the cage with paper, newspaper or a brown paper bag, paper towels can also be used.

I am not surprised that these small birds are so very popular. Pet Finches are very easy to care for and make great pets for everybody, even those who live in a small apartment, have children, and other pets.

Pet Finches occur in a huge variety of different colors, designs, and even personalities. Favorite varieties include the Zebra Finch, Gouldian Finch, and the Society Finch. Almost all Pet Finches like to have company they can be kept in big cages with some other finches and hardbills. Try to avoid mixing up sizes as the bigger species might be aggressive to a smaller sized species.

It is not advisable to keep to many pet finches in one cage they will start to pick at each others feathers. Mostly finches are very friendly, still a mixed group of different birds should be watched for fighting and aggressions. A parrot will pout if you don’t have time to spend every day. Compared to pet finches they will be fine to play among their own companions. That’s a big positive especially when you have a busy life style like most of us do.

Because pet finches are more curious about birds then people, they might never get so tame as to sit on your finger or shoulder. Most pet finches will not achieve a point to get handled from humans, although a view species can be tamed with a lot of patience and time. If it is unavoidable to touch your pet finch examples are trimming it’s nails. Simply place your palm on the back and hold it with your fingers – forefinger and thumb on either side of the birds head. It is very rare that finches bite, and even if they do it will not harm you.

It is simple to take care of your pet finches, one major rule is they should be able to move around as they please in their cages. You should keep the cage airy and free from to many accessories so your finches can fly from perch to perch without obstructions hindering their freedom. I would suggest one single toy, a mirror or a branch it should be moved around periodically to keep your finch entertained.

If a toy is safe for a parakeet it is also safe for pet finches. A great way to treat your finch is by placing a bowl of water in the cage for a bath every view days. In the wild finches like to roll in dampened grasses or dew for a bath the same can be provided for your finches. Place a small amount of dandelion leaves or grasses at the bottom of the cage.

These hardy and very entertaining birds are usually also more quiet then other species of birds. They are less costly to buy than parrots and softbilled birds, which adds to their attractiveness. Finches have very cheerful voices and will provide great entertainment with their brilliant personalities.
